What is Surgical hand scrubbing ?
Surgical hand scrubbing
Surgical hand scrubbing is a process that is performed before entering the operating room or during surgery to ensure that the hands of the surgical team are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to prevent the transmission of microorganisms to the patient.
The most common method for surgical hand scrubbing is the timed scrub method, which involves the following steps:
- Wet your hands and forearms with water.
- Apply an antimicrobial surgical scrub solution to your hands and forearms, up to the elbow.
- Rub your hands and forearms vigorously using a circular motion.
- Pay particular attention to the fingertips, thumbs, and the areas between the fingers
- Proceed to scrub the hands, wrists, and forearms thoroughly, ensuring that all areas are covered with the scrub solution.
- Rinse your hands and forearms thoroughly with water, keeping your hands elevated to prevent the water from running down your arms.
- Dry your hands and forearms with a sterile towel or a
sterile, disposable surgical drape.
- Once your hands are dry, you can proceed to don sterile gloves and gown for the surgical procedure.
During the scrub, it is essential to use proper technique, such as rubbing the palms, backs of the hands, fingers, and wrists in a specific order, to ensure that all areas are thoroughly cleaned. The exact technique may vary depending on the specific scrub solution being used and the facility's protocols.
